I will take any excuse to dress up and that is really the best part of attending weddings. Yes, celebrating our loved ones is awesome, but for the fashion minded, it's a time to break out the big guns, aka the shoes, the bags, the dresses. And I went allll out for the wedding I attended recently.
Let's get into the details. I rented a dress from Rent the Runway during their supply chain fiasco and one of the dresses I thought I was going to like a lot was not going to be shipped in time for my event, so I got to select another two dresses for free. That mishap led me to the Christian Siriano number I ended up wearing to the wedding. I had actually planned on wearing a floor length dress because the wedding was black tie, but really, no one else was wearing black tie so I might have ended up a bit overdressed. The dress fit well, if not a bit roomy. I got it in a size 8 and the fabric was thick enough that I did not feel exposed. There was some room in the bust and armpit area, but nothing distracting. Fun fact: I met Christian Siriano when I was interning at a fashion blog in high school.
I typically would not wear black to an American wedding, but the bride requested that all guests wear black. What the bride wants, the bride gets.
I bought my bag secondhand from The RealReal, which, if you're unfamiliar, is an awesome online designer resale site. There had been another Saint Laurent bag with a star motif that I was eyeing for weeks, and when I decided it was time to get it, it had already been sold. Big SIGH. But, then I came across this bag that also had stars and took it as a sign. This is the Saint Laurent wallet on a chain (I removed the chain and put it inside the bag) and is actually pretty spacious considering that is designed to be small. I got the bag for 30% off the already discounted price and a $100 credit to use on the site later, so I would say it was a good deal. The bag was in incredible condition and it's obvious The RealReal has higher standards for condition than I do.
Finally, the shoes are Christin Louboutin and I got these on sale during the twice annual sale via the Louboutin boutique in Nordstrom. They're so extra, so I try to wear them to every fancier event. Since it was chilly out, I topped the look off with a leather jacket that I got a couple of years ago at the BCBG outlet. I've always thought only cool, chic women wear their jackets over their shoulders instead of actually putting them on, so I tried to channel that same coolness.
My biggest takeaway from dressing for this wedding is shop secondhand and rent clothing. Hooray for the circular economy!

Earlier this year, I attended my first wedding as an adult and this weekend, I’ll attend my second. I say, “as an adult” because it’s totally different than being 12 years old and having your mom pick out your dress for you. As an adult, you have to consider, maybe with or without the consult of your mom, the stated attire for the wedding, the time of the wedding (day time or evening), the season, and appropriateness for the venue (i.e. church vs not a church). So much to consider!
With that being said, I’m here for the simplification of the whole process of getting “occasion” dresses. Occasion dresses being any dress you would not normally wear and buy specifically for an occasion. When I thought about the fact that I have had not one, but two prom dress sitting in a closet for five years, I knew this wasn’t a road I wanted to go down as an adult who is trying to be more conscious of the things I buy and the reasons why I buy them. Chances are, I’ll never buy another occasion dress because, to put it plainly, they are a colossal waste of money and waste of the time put into finding them. Since I want you to be free from this dress burden, too, I’m sharing some of my favorite ways to get around it. And they’re all eco-friendly!
1. Rent a dress!
For the wedding I attended in May, I rented a dress from Rent the Runway. Rent the Runway is a really incredible, innovative solution to exactly the problem I mentioned: women buying expensive dresses to wear once for some occasion. Renting tuxedos has been a thing for a long time, and Rent the Runway essentially allows those of us who wear dresses to do the same. You can rent a designer dress for a fraction of the off-the-rack price. I got my dress shipped to the Rent the Runway store in Chicago and was able to try it on there and browse other available styles if I decided I wanted to exchange my rental. It was so, so easy and I cannot recommend Rent the Runway enough.

Now, you might be saying, why would you buy something from Lululemon if that's what you've been thinking about? Isn't their sizing so jacked up there's basically no difference between a 2 and a 10?? Since then, the brand has done some major damage control (and product enhancements), including finding a new CEO. Yet, even that did not fix their problems as Lululemon has recently launched another search for a CEO after the body-shamer's successor engaged in "inappropriate workplace behavior." Certainly, a company with trouble, but we've all got problematic faves and have to continue to ask more of the places where we spend money.

Alright, let's be clear: I am not a natural hair blogger. I take care of my hair, but tend to stick with what I know and what's easiest. For me, that usually means braids, or some other style with extensions. One thing with having my hair in braids with synthetic hair, is that it's hard to keep my natural hair moisturized. So, whenever I take my braids out, getting and keeping my hair hydrated is my number one concern.

Whenever you see me out and about, I'm either carrying a ridiculously small bag or a ridiculously large one. While I am a big fan of my North Face backpack, it will never be the bag to tie a look together. So, on days where I am interested in functionality and style, I tend to go with one of my carryall totes.
My absolute favorite tote is this one from Apolis. They have built a brand around this incredibly durable and good looking tote. I got this my first year of college for I think $70 (and that totally put a hurtin on my pocket back then), but it has been the single most used item I have ever purchased. This is my go-to grocery bag and it can fit everything ever, which is good and bad because sometimes it gets to be bit too heavy, but that's okay. The bag can hold at least 135lbs (!), has a waterproof lining so any food spills are super easy to clean, and the artisans who make these bags receive Fair Trade wages. 10/10 would recommend.
Confession: I have a thing for coats. Having grown up in Chicago, I know the value of a solid winter coat and also the value of a good looking wool coat for those not-as-frigid days. There is something so cool about seeing someone whose coat adds to their look. Enter: this gem of a coat from J. Crew. I stalked it for weeks, waiting for it to go on sale, for my size to come back in stock, for it to be on sale and in my size. One day, it randomly worked out and I got this coat for 30% off. I knew I wanted an office appropriate coat, but I also wanted something that wouldn't age me. So, I thought this coat was a happy medium of being sleek and work-appropriate, but it being navy instead of black with the piping kept it young and fun. This coat also has a belt, but I like to wear it open to take advantage of the movement of it.
My twin sister, Jeanette, and I spent this past weekend in Austin, Texas to celebrate our birthday. It was my first time in Texas and it was everything and nothing I expected it to be. The heat was overwhelming, the BBQ was hearty, and the nightlife was unlike anything I've ever seen.
As soon as landed, at the recommedation of our older brother, we headed to Franklin Barbecue. Franklin Barbecue is probably the most famous BBQ spot in all of the US right now and it has the line to prove it. We arrived a little after the 11am open time and were greeted with a three hour wait time. The first people to get in line that Friday arrived at 5:30am. Anyone that knows me well, knows that I don't eat meat often, let alone beef and pork. But, when in Rome. We went for the ribs, but they sold out as soon as we got to the counter to order, so we ordered pulled pork, brisket, and sausage -- we waited three hours, we had to try it all.
Look, I don't know much about meat, but you did not need to put any barbecue sauce or anything on this. It was all so flavorful on its own. Well worth the three hour wait.

At the Air Society, there was a closet (read: decently sized room) where you could chat with women designers from Chicago and even try on some of their digs, a braid bar, henna tattoo station, manicure stations, kitchen with tasty and healthy snacks, and a totally sweet rooftop patio. Throughout the day, there were organized panel discussion and roundtable talks with women changing the game in Chicago and elsewhere. And, of course, this wouldn't be a Nike event if fitness didn't figure into the equation: there were rooftop yoga and high intensity training classes you could join. The coolest part of the event was seeing a diverse group of women come together to just hang out, have a good time, and embrace their bodies.

With graduation fast approaching (gasp!), my mom wanted to send out announcements to our family and friends. Just wanted to quickly share a few of my favorite shots from the mini photoshoot I had. The Organization of Black Students hosted its annual Heritage Ball this past Friday at the Stoney Island Arts Bank. UChicago Professor Theaster Gates is behind the transformation of the 1920s bank into a community center, library, art gallery, and media archive. This was the first time the Heritage Ball was off campus and it couldn't have been held at a better location. About 100 students came out to the event and everyone looked really nice. Considering how stressful this past week has been for lots of students, I think Friday was a much needed relief. Also, we managed to avoid destroying any of the art, so I'd say it was a success.

Coming out of the dark into the light with the warm weather in the Chi. The sun always serves as a solid pick-me-up, so I decided to show my face on the interwebs. Also, Lemonade. I can't even say much right now...but know that Beyoncé and James Blake working together is one of the most overwhelming facts in the world right now.
Over winter break back in December, my mom gave me one of her skirts from when she was my age. Or I think I found it and took it upon myself bring it back with me to Chicago. I wasn't too sure if I liked it, but as a true fashion girl, I'm drawn to things that are maybe kinda ugly. So, I took it upon myself to make it into an item I really liked.
I kept the texture and print mixing grounded by picking up on the secondary colors in the skirt -- the black and red.

This is just a friendly reminder that some of the coolest pieces might not be something new. Picking through your mom's closet or your friend's closet is a cheap and earth friendly way to refresh your own wardrobe.

Hellooooo out there. It's been a while since I've been on here, but, alas, New York Fashion Week came calling. While NYFW is not totally over yet, I figured I'd share some of my favorite looks so far. Ready to wear shows are my favorite: its wearable fashion. Yes, you'll get some off the wall looks, but for the most part, what's on the runway is something that you could wear as is. The shows are primed for inspiring everyday women like myself in our daily clothing choices.
First thing: runways and presentations are looking more diverse than ever. Zac Posen's had so many models of color -- truly a beautiful sight.
Now, on to the looks.

Yeezy Season Three. Not sure what makes Season Three distinctly different from Season Two or Season One, but, then again, I wonder who Kanye even is anymore. I like the idea of this look -- the monochrome, the oversized sweater with fitted skirt and thigh highs -- more than the actual look. It would be so easy to recreate a similar fit, minus the tit peeking through the sweater. But, some people are into that, so maybe with the tit peeking through.

Makes you wonder what season it actually is. It's an intimate look with a bit of stomach showing, but the heaviness of the top keeps the sexiness subdued. I've been thinking about scarves, and scarf like items, as shirts for a minute. One of my favorite bloggers, Karla Deras, often pulls off looks like this with much ease.

After dropping mad guap last week and feeling bad about it for two seconds, I've now reached a point where I can say that the purchases I made were well worth it. Well worth it in that I recognize these might not have been the smartest purchases, but it be like that sometimes. So, on with it.
Supreme Malcolm X Baseball Shirt. I was just perusing the Supreme website because I'm a headass and came across this raw jersey. Yes, we can go back and forth about whether or not Malcolm X should be a celebrated figure in history, but clearly my feels lean in one direction.
Birkenstock, Monterey Black Leather. I've been wanting these for the absolute longest. They're all leather and so icy. I got them in the mail the day I finished my last final and promptly slid them onto my feet. The outfit was fairly crucial that day; we might revisit it in the near future. Also, I got the Malcolm X jersey a size too big, so I envision something cool happening with these birks and black denim.

One of the things I love about my friends is that there is a common understanding between us that we can send each other texts that read, "I look really good today," and we won't think anything of it. Arrogance doesn't exist in our circle. If you out here loving yourself, let everybody know. Ain't no shame in that. So, when Chase hit me up to tell me that his look on point, I figured we should make a photo shoot out of it.

He claims that he will be showing out come spring quarter. So, now that I've put this in the internet, he'll have to come through.
Last Friday, MODA, UChicago's resident fashion focused student organization hosted their annual fashion show. It's a solid excuse to get off campus and dress up. My night got off to a rocky start when our Lyft driver got lost and whipped the car into an alley and we all thought we weren't gonna make it out of that ride alive. But, alas, we survived to tell the story. After that, the night was smooth. It's always cool to see UChi dress up, so I snapped some pics of my favorite looks from the night.

Many actors and actress stuck with their tried and true silhouettes and trusty designers. Surprisingly, the men took some of the biggest risks tonight with varying degrees of success. Patricia Arquette is Rosetta Getty. Personally, I’m a huge fan of a black and
white outfit so this look is a winner for me.
Arquette frequently opts for the one-shoulder dress and she’s keeping with the
trend tonight. Granted, this look isn’t
exactly a fashion risk, but Arquette is bringing some much needed ease and relaxation to the red carpet.
Felicity Jones in a classic Alexander McQueen. Alexander McQueen has perfected the high
neckline. Felicity proves here that she's not just another English Rose. The
color is delicate but the detailing on the bodice adds some edge. Well played Jones, well played.
Margot Robbie in Saint Laurent. Robbie is following the 1970s trend well here. Saint Laurent can do absolutely no wrong, but I think ditching the necklace
and pulling the hair up could improve the look.

I just took some photos of her today in which she layered a sweater over a dress. It creates for a more interesting look and lets you wear your cute summer dresses in cooler weather.

At said shoot, I wore a Derek Lam 10 Crosby dress. Derek Lam has been one of my favorite designers for a while and his 10 Crosby line offers his designs at a lower price point than his namesake brand. So, I was bout it bout it when I found this dress for the low at Neiman Marcus Last Call. Lauren and I didn't tell each other what we were gonna wear, so it was a happy coincidence when we somewhat coordinated.
As the temperatures began to fall in Spain, I decided to get creative and weather-proof that outfit. I remember getting dressed that morning in Spain and hoping that this outfit would work: stripes with plaid with lace, not a usual combination for me.
Whenever I layer a shirt under this dress, I make sure there is at least one color in common to keep the pattern mixing from being too overwhelming. In most cases, it's navy blue that stays constant between the two pieces.
